Meet Your Trainer
Hi there! My name is Taya Hekking, and I am the owner and head trainer of Elite K-9 Companions. I have always loved dogs and spent my teenage years working as a dog walker. I graduated from Utah State University with an associates degree in communication sciences. I then attended the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers and certified in advanced obedience. I volunteered at my local small and exotic animal hospital as well as Best Friends Animal Society and the Canine Animal Welfare Society. In 2019 I began my professional career in dog training and have since trained hundreds of dogs of various ages, breeds, and training goals.
I specialize in training service dogs and have two service dogs of my own. I live in Smithfield Utah with my husband and four personal dogs, Boo (therapy dog and in home service dog), Maui (service dog), Kenai (sled and sport dog), and Vixen (retired personal protection dog). I enjoy all things Disney and house plants!
Our Training Methods
We believe in utilizing a balanced, foundations first approach to training. We train using science backed techniques focused on positive reinforcement, confidence building, motivation, and relationship building. For puppies (6 months old and younger) we use primarily positive reinforcement, structure, and slip leads. For adult dogs (6 months and older) we teach foundations using positive reinforcement. We then layer in the appropriate training collar for clear and fair communication. This holds the dog accountable for previously learned behaviors. We generalize and proof all behaviors to various locations and distractions. For off leash recalls we use Ecollar Technologies. We believe that your dog deserves the best life possible. After all, trained dogs have more freedom and fun!
